Last fall while talking with my friend Sarah about an online permaculture class she'd been taking, she mentioned Fibershed as a point of interest. I googled "Fibershed" as we were talking & found "Fibershed", Rebecca Burgess' book, which I immediately ordered. The book literally changed the trajectory of my life! One of the many things the book (& website) includes is a list related resources by region (US & internationally) including information about alpaca fiber & resources. These caught my eye as I've had a lifelong fascination with llamas & alpacas, which I never knew what to do with. At the same time, I saw an “Alpacas at Windy Hill” entry at the Ventura County Open Farm Day which led me to signing up for an “Intro to Alpacas” class. By the end of the class - it was just Cindy, the owner, & me - I found myself feeling more grounded & peaceful than ever. Before I left, I asked if she would consider having me as a weekly volunteer for a year (to start with) and to my surprise, she said yes!
My Alpaca Adventures covers this year-long journey where I share experiences about my weekly volunteer days at Alpacas at Windy Hills, attend fibershed events, participate in & contribute to the nascent fibershed movement. Each month I’ll post a summary of the prior month’s journal entries & discoveries. In this inaugural post, I’ve included links to all journal entries to date. Next month will be much shorter, I promise! I hope you enjoy reading Alpaca Adventures as much as I enjoy writing it!
