world’s oldest pants

With the help of an expert weaver, archaeologists have unraveled the design secrets behind the world’s oldest pants. The 3,000-year-old wool trousers belonged to a man buried between 1000 and 1200 BCE in Western China. To make them, ancient weavers combined four different techniques to create a garment specially engineered for fighting on horseback, with flexibility in some places and sturdiness in others.

In the Ground of Our Unknowing

“The future will be sculpted, that is, by the elemental friendships and alliances that we choose to sustain us, by our full-bodied capacity for earthly compassion and dark wonder, by our ability to listen, attentive and at ease, within the forest of our unknowing.”

A Simpler Time Alpacas & Mill

When the So Cal Fibershed team visited A Simpler Time Alpacas & Mill — we got a firsthand look at the scope of the challenge we face in our processing stream. What an eye-opener. So far as we know, other than Morro Bay FleeceWorks, which is technically in the No Cal Fibershed, A Simpler Time is the only functioning mill in all of Southern California.

“Similarly, a new path for California may seem revolutionary in its vision as it will mean dissolving current systems, reappropriating land through expropriation for the benefit of the many, and insisting on mutualism and collaboration for new social organizations. But it’s a vision that can be possible if we decide this is the future we want, and resolve to follow a new ethic, one of mutual respect, one of compassion, and one that is aimed toward nurturing life.” Orange orchard in Ojai Valley. Our practice is based in the greater Los Angeles area, originally Tovaangar (Los Angeles basin, South Channel Islands); the traditional lands of the Tongva people. We acknowledge that their sovereignty was never ceded, and we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), Ahiihirom (Elders), and eyoohiinkem (relatives/relations) past, present, and emerging.
