Offered by member Emily Endo and her High Desert Observatory:
In this one day immersive outdoor workshop we will explore natural dyeing with local plants collected on the Harrison House Arts and Ecology Center grounds and work with materials such as prickly pear cacti, cochineal, pomegranate and sage. Participants will learn how to process raw plant matter into natural dyes and introductory fabric dyeing techniques. The class will discuss eco-friendly mordanting processes and how to work with both animal and plant fibers. Students will leave with dye samples and their own hand dyed silk scarf or handkerchief made in class.

About the Instructor:
Emily Endo received an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010 and a BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2006. Emily served as the Chair of Oregon College of Art and Craft Fibers Department, and worked as a mentor in the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Emily has worked with students of all ages and abilities. They taught visual arts classes for adults with developmental disabilities and children’s wilderness survival and craft classes. Emily has exhibited and lectured internationally at venues such as the Scottish Glass Art Society, the Museum of Contemporary Craft (Portland), the American Craft Council (Minneapolis), Portland Art Museum, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Their work has been featured in magazines including American Craft, Interior Design, Art Ltd. and Frontrunner. Endo is a SoCal Fibershed member who lives and works in Yucca Valley, CA where they are the co-director of the High Desert Observatory.
